Summary

The world is in the grips of mass formation—a dangerous, collective type of hypnosis—as we bear witness to loneliness, free-floating anxiety, and fear giving way to censorship, loss of privacy, and surrendered freedoms。 It is all spurred by a singular, focused crisis narrative that forbids dissident views and relies on destructive groupthink。

“Alternative voices are stigmatized by a veritable Ministry of Truth, which is crowded with “fact checkers。” Freedom of speech is curtailed by various forms of censorship and self-censorship; people’s right to self-determination is infringed upon by coercive vaccination strategies, which impose heretofore unthinkable social exclusion and segregation upon society。”

Desmet’s work on mass formation theory was brought to the world’s attention on The Joe Rogan Experience and in major alternative news outlets around the globe。 Read this book to get beyond the sound bites!

Totalitarianism is not a coincidence and does not form in a vacuum。 It arises from a collective psychosis that has followed a predictable script throughout history, its formation gaining strength and speed with each generation—from the Jacobins to the Nazis and Stalinists—as technology advances。 Governments, mass media, and other mechanized forces use fear, loneliness, and isolation to demoralize populations and exert control, persuading large groups of people to act against their own interests, always with destructive results。

In The Psychology of Totalitarianism, world-renowned Professor of Clinical Psychology Mattias Desmet deconstructs the societal conditions that allow this collective psychosis to take hold。 By looking at our current situation and identifying the phenomenon of “mass formation”—a type of collective hypnosis—he clearly illustrates how close we are to surrendering to totalitarian regimes。

With detailed analyses, examples, and results from years of research, Desmet lays out the steps that lead toward mass formation, including:
- An overall sense of loneliness and lack of social connections and bonds
- A lack of meaning—unsatisfying “bullsh*t jobs” that don’t offer purpose
- Free-floating anxiety and discontent that arise from loneliness and lack of meaning
- Manifestation of frustration and aggression from anxiety
- Emergence of a consistent narrative from government officials, mass media, etc。, that exploits and channels frustration and anxiety

In addition to clear psychological analysis—and building on Hannah Arendt’s essential work on totalitarianism, The Origins of Totalitarianism—Desmet offers a sharp critique of the cultural “groupthink” that existed prior to the pandemic and advanced during the COVID crisis。 He cautions against the dangers of our current societal landscape, media consumption, and reliance on manipulative technologies and then offers simple solutions—both individual and collective—to prevent the willing sacrifice of our freedoms。

“We can honor the right to freedom of expression and the right to self-determination without feeling threatened by each other,” Desmet writes。 “But there is a point where we must stop losing ourselves in the crowd to experience meaning and connection。 That is the point where the winter of totalitarianism gives way to a spring of life。”

Erg interessant boek!

A great insight into what is unfolding in our society today。 For those who wonder how Stalin and Hitler came to power, and how our society has positioned itself to walk to same path, this book offers the psychology of how 'normal people' can turn into supporters of atrocities。 A great insight into what is unfolding in our society today。 For those who wonder how Stalin and Hitler came to power, and how our society has positioned itself to walk to same path, this book offers the psychology of how 'normal people' can turn into supporters of atrocities。 。。。more

While I completely agree with most everything asserted in this book, it did feel a bit too much like a vehicle to complain about current events。 There were too many off-topic tangents, and honestly I could've done without the misplaced theistic spiel at the end。 While I completely agree with most everything asserted in this book, it did feel a bit too much like a vehicle to complain about current events。 There were too many off-topic tangents, and honestly I could've done without the misplaced theistic spiel at the end。 。。。more

Religious zealots in many religions who would kill "infidels," or those who don't believe in the same God。 Are we to worry more about those who empirically try to use facts, admittedly sometimes messy and contradictory, rather than those who use their "instincts" to solve problems--i。e。, the orange bloviator Trump? The use of scientific principles has led to the least amount of starvation and lowest amount of poverty in the history of the world。 Yes, science does deserve criticism, and its "facts" lead to erroneous conclusions that can harm individuals。 To be fair, there is some intelligent analysis about the deficits of making scientism the pinnacle of human reasoning and ignoring the humanities and the capacity to empathize as even more important humanistic qualities。However, do we want decision-makers who are ignorant of science, which has many diverse voices that don't adhere to a rigid ideology, and who did bring up alternative assertion about problems with how deaths were being attributed to Covid infections。 He argues that mass formation is the psychological basis of totalitarianism, and the Covid-19 exemplified "mass formation。" Mao, Hitler, Pol Pot, Stalin-like behaviors could be seen in the Covid-19 response? On page 106, he writes, "Totalitarianism is not about monstrous people-- it is about normal people who stick to a morbid, dehumanizing way of thinking or "logic。" No, these were evil people and in fear-inducing regimes like this there is no "logic" that would justify killing, its either conform or die, no matter the theories meant to explain this type of acquiescence。There is even more that is odious about Desmet's reasoning (but I don't believe he should be "canceled"), that obscures systemic inequality and blames the victim。 On page 46 he writes, " The cause of suffering is typically traced to a mechanical "defect" in the body or to an extended entity, such as pathogenic bacterium or virus。 Its cause is localized and can (in principle) be controlled, managed, and manipulated WITHOUT THE PATIENT HAVING TO WRESTLE WITH ANY PSYCHOLOGICAL, ETHICAL, OR MORAL COMPLEXITY。" (Caps mine)。 So African-Americans who have been exposed to redlining in urban neighborhoods, who are less likely to experience top-notch schooling, who suffer discrimination in medical treatment。。。。 should reflect on their own complicity for suffering illness? Either Desmet is incredibly misinformed, or more likely, is doing his own motivated reasoning to advance a spurious argument。 In times with autocratic leaders taking leadership reigns that minimize freedom, it is not mechanistic or scientific thinking that is to blame, (and using Covid-19 as an explanatory variable is incredibly stupid) since autocrats like Trump, Orban, Putin, etc。 were in place even before Covid-19 arose。 It's unfortunate that a premise that should be considered--totalitarianism-- should be so thoroughly botched by "the world's leading expert on the theory of mass formation。。。" Then again, perhaps the reproducibility crisis that Desmet's cites in clinical studies is most acute in psychology-- the field in which he practices, and even more problematic--psychoanalysis, which may lead to a theory that totalitarianism may develop because mommy wasn't attentive to her little boy。 。。。more

Everything else, Ohrana being behind Protocols is never ever documented, even when all Russian tzar's archives have been opened。 So alleged "fictious origin is beyound dispute" is quite strange at least from an author who advocates return to real science with "opened eyes" for facts。 To have a different opinion about any mentioned subjects is one thing and I should welcome if Mr Desmet opted for that discourse in his book。 However stating some wrong "beyond dispute" conclusions is utterly different thing。 Especially as a reader of Joly's book I am disgusted with author's "half copied" misinformation。 I certainly do not recommend this book for reading。 。。。more

The book is for those who lived the last two years asking themselves, "What the hell is happening with people's sanity"。 Mattias Desmet did a great job explaining the current state of the psyche of the masses from a psychological point of view。 The book is not an easy read。 Concentration is needed。 Perhaps, the book doesn't answer all the questions but it helps to understand the present situation much better。 The book is for those who lived the last two years asking themselves, "What the hell is happening with people's sanity"。 Mattias Desmet did a great job explaining the current state of the psyche of the masses from a psychological point of view。 The book is not an easy read。 Concentration is needed。 Perhaps, the book doesn't answer all the questions but it helps to understand the present situation much better。 。。。more
